Hilti FS 635
Trowelable Firestop
Compound

A high performance, low cost firestop material for large, complex openings in fire-rated construction.

Product Description:
FS 635 Trowelable Firestop Compound is a single component, dry, powdery blend that is mixed with water to form a pourable/trowelable material suitable for firestopping large openings in fire-rated walls and floors. When installed according to the Hilti product literature or UL Fire Resistance Directory, FS 635 meets the requirements of UL 1479 (ASTM E-814), providing a rigid, lightweight, non-combustible barrier against the spread of flames.
Basic Uses:
FS 635 is designed for sealing large penetrations where a fire-rated sealant is not practical. Typical applications include multiple steel and copper pipes or conduits, cable trays, and electrical busways.
Limitations:
FS 635 Trowelable Firestop Compound should not be applied:
  • As a structural material for bearing external loads.
  • In penetrations subject to significant movement.
  • Where constant vibration is expected.
  • To any opening other than those specifically covered in Hilti product literature or UL Fire Resistance Directory.
  • In any penetration other than those specifically described in the firestop applications drawings and installation instructions portion of this manual or the current UL Fire Resistance Directory
Composition and Materials:
FS 635 Trowelable Firestop Compound is a special blend of materials that is easily mixed with water to form a uniform slurry which is both pourable and trowelable.
Packaging:
FS 635 Trowelable Firestop Compound is conveniently packaged in plastic pails. Each pail contains 40 lbs. of material.
Color:
FS 635, when mixed and cured, is red in color for easy identification.
Applicable Standards:
FS 635 Trowelable Firestop Compound is classified by Underwriters Laboratories Inc.® as a "Fill, Void or Cavity Material" for use in Through-Penetration Firestop System Numbers CAJ 1140, CAJ 4017 and CAJ 6006. Three hour fire ratings were achieved in actual tests at UL in accordance with UL 1479 (ASTM E-814). Specific details can be found in the firestop applications drawings and installation instructions portion of this manual or the current UL Fire Resistance Directory.
Installation:
  1. Before handling, read product Material Safety Data Sheets and product label for detailed use and health information. Also, consult the firestop applications drawings and installation instructions portion of this manual or the current UL Fire Resistance Directory for specific application details.
  2. FS 635 product and substrate application temperature range is min. 40°F, max. 110°F.
  3. Remove all loose dirt, dust, oil, and any other foreign substances that would impair adhesion to the penetrating items and the construction substrate being penetrated.
  4. Dam the opening to be firestopped using plywood, foam board or other rigid sheet material. To prevent FS 635 from sticking to the forms, cover them with plastic sheathing or apply an appropriate form release agent.
  5. FS 635 should be mixed with water.

RECOMMENDED MIX RATIO: 2 GALLONS (± 1 QUART) OF WATER PER 40 LB. PAIL OF FS 635
Only clean, potable water, free of any contaminants should be used. There are two methods which can be used to mix FS 635 (note: do not mix more material than will be used within 60 minutes):

5.1 Empty the contents of the pail into a separate container (this will create dust in the air - make sure the area is well ventilated and use respiratory protection). Pour 2 gallons (± 1 quart) of water into the empty pail. Add approximately 1/4 of the FS 635 and mix to a uni form consistency with a Hilti TE-18M Drill (with the key-type chuck) and mixing paddle. Add more FS 635 and mix again. Continue this process until all the contents have been mixed. This method minimizes labor and results in a consistent and thorough mix.
- OR -
5.2 Add 2 gallons (± 1 quart) of water to one 40 lb. pail of FS 635 and mix thoroughly - using a Hilti TE-18M Drill (with the key-type chuck) and mixing paddle. Scrape the bottom corners of the pail with a clean piece of rebar or equivalent to loosen any remaining unmixed material. Complete the mixing process with the drill and paddle. This method virtually eliminates dust.
  1. Yields are dependent on the amount of water added, as well as the method and duration of mixing. Typically, one 40 lb. pail of FS 635 mechanically mixed with 2 gallons of water will yield approximately 1,260 cu.in.(0.73 cu.ft.).
  2. Pour or trowel FS 635 in place to the required depth. Work it into all voids, then trowel the surface to provide a neat, smooth, finished appearance.
  3. Clean up uncured material with water.
  4. Leave the completed firestop seal undisturbed for 8-10 hours. Forms may be removed after 24 hours. Full cure takes 28 days.
Precautions:
Avoid creating dust. Equip mixers with dust covers. Always provide adequate ventilation and respiratory protection. AVOID CONTACT WITH EYES AND SKIN. Wear skin and eye protection to avoid contact with dust or spray. Use antislip surfaces on working platforms. FOR INDUSTRIAL USE ONLY.
Storage & Shelf Life:
FS 635 has a shelf life of 1 year from the date of manufacture if left unopened and stored in a safe dry place between 40°F and 90°F.
Re-Penetration:
No maintenance of FS 635 is required. However, if additions or changes are required, it can be easily modified or repenetrated.
